F. C. Thomas Allnutt, PhD is the President & CSO LLC, a small business focused on new technology development and commercialization. He has experience in industrial research and commercialization of the new technologies either directly or through support of other businesses. Expertise in algal and microbial biotechnology with broad knowledge of related areas. Inventor on >17 patents issued or pending and published >45 peer reviewed papers. His previous positions were as CEO of BrioBiotech LLC, Sr. VP R&D at Phycal Inc., Program Director for the National Science Foundation’s SBIR/STTR Program Biotechnology Group, Research Director at Martek Biosciences, and VP R&D at Advanced BioNutrition.

Broad experience as an industrial scientist. Have expertise in algal biotechnology, algal biofuels & bioproducts, molecular biology in bacteria, yeasts and algae, aquaculture in areas of animal health and nutrition, oral delivery of sensitive bioproducts. Additional experience in grant writing and new product commercialization.

Professional Outlook & Approach to Science

  My responsibilities have evolved through small business and government experience - from a bench scientist managing technicians to overall research and development authority for three small businesses (aquaculture health, algal biotechnology and renewable biofuels/bioproducts). Additionally, I managed governmental funding for technology transfer to the marketplace both as a funder of such research (working for the government) and as a grantee (taking innovative technologies to the marketplace). My work style is to focus on the problem and apply available resources to get it done in a rigorous scientific manner in a commercially relevant timeframe. I firmly believe that to build a company on substandard science will doom the company and is not in the interests of any stakeholder. I am direct and to the point yet am able to incorporate the opinions of others in order to focus the team to successfully complete the goal at hand. With my broad experience in biotechnology, I am an asset in both the management of science and operations.
